Eating Disorders of the Hunger Artist

Introduction

In the present world, eating disorders are reaching epidemic proportions. Treasure, Claudio, and Zucker (2010), list anorexia nervosa as one of the eating disorders (582). According to Treasure et.al, (2010) the disorder is characterized by a low weight, desire to be thin, food restriction, and fear of gaining weight (584). The condition strikes best among young, educated, talented, ambitious, and eager for perfection women. Since the 13th century to the 21st century more women than men are involved in self-starvation, fasting, and other forms of food restraining practices (Gooldin, 28). However, in the 18th and 19th century, this condition was evident in a small percentage of men who did this for the purpose of art. These performers were called, The Hunger Artists or The Living Skeletons, and they had gained popularity as a medium of entertainment. In the present time, this art has called for attention within the agendas of present-day eating disorders in which, the culture of self-starvation and fasting has been related to eating disorders such as Bulimia Nervosa and Anorexia Nervosa.

Eating Disorder

The art of self-starvation has featured in several works of literature such as A Hunger Artist of Franz Kafka. The short story was written in 1922 and it concerns an event which occurs in an unspecified place and time (Gooldin, 47). The text is a performing artist who is famous for his art of self-starvation for as far as forty days at one time. However, the hunger artist turns out not to be satisfied with both his manager and audience. The artist feels that they totally do not appreciate his ability and the nature of his art. Internally, he is frustrated with himself and the feeling of isolation from the outside world. He derives pleasure and skill of fasting from his willingness to practice self-denial. The artist is seen to have control over his conditions of pain and hunger as he pushes harder past his limits in search of a new art of starvation. The starving artist concentrates on his art by fasting but he is seen to have other forms of hunger within himself. He struggles with alienation from the rest of the world, “People grew familiar with the strange idea that they could be expected, in times like these, to take an interest in a hunger artist, and with this familiarity, the verdict went out against him. He might fast as much as he could, and he did so, but nothing could save him now, people passed him by” (Kafka, 4).
