Assignment essay title: Chemical and biological hazards associated with safety officer at Floral Landscaping Company. Format: Business report, using the format set out in College of Business Guidelines for Reference and Presentation in Written Reports and Essays (2010).
Weighting: 20%
At the Floral Landscaping Company, each contract task has to have a safe work procedure developed specifically for each situation. The company has received a new contract to landscape a new head office complex that is situated on sloping ground. The following activities will be undertaken: clearing the current vegetation, loosening the topsoil and contouring the surface to suit the landscaping design; this will involve the use of petrol-driven brushcutters, and a small backhoe/excavator to move the soil around
use of chemical fertiliser and compost to replenish the soil; these are distributed using a backpack for the liquid fertiliser and a combination of the backhoe and hand shovel work for the compost
use of herbicides to prevent re-growth of weeds selective placement of large boulders, and laying decomposed granite for the pathways manual planting of trees and shrubs laying of instant turf in selected locations.
You are the safety officer and you have been asked to prepare a report on the possible chemical and biological hazards associated with this job.
Undertake this risk assessment using the principles of the WorkSafe Victoria handbook for workplaces, Controlling OHS hazards and risks (Edition 2, June 2017).
Identify the specific hazards likely to be involved in the job.
For chemical hazards (fertiliser and herbicide), locate an appropriate SDS on the internet and identify the relevant hazards associated with the chemicals used. There are biological hazards related to compost – also look these up on the internet.
2 Assess the risks in relation to the identified hazards.
Review relevant health and safety regulations to assess legislated requirements. Do you need additional hygiene monitoring to help you assess the risk?
3 Identify appropriate control measures that could be used to minimise the risks to the landscaping team.
Use the hazard and risk register and risk rating form in Figure 6.6 on page 123 of Archer et al. (2018) to determine the risk rating when no controls are used and then reassess the risk rating when the controls are implemented, to see if the risk would be reduced. Include the completed register with and without controls in your report.
Include recommendations in your report. You need to consider risk prioritisation and take into account the hierarchy of controls, but remember ‘reasonably practicable’.
