Description

This is going off of Descartes Meditation 6. If you could use the book Classics of Western Philosophy Eighth Edition that would be amazing. However, other sources can also be used if they are put into an annotated bibliography. I am only looking to a B on this paper so it doesn’t have to be super fancy but if i get an A that would be great too.

The Proper Role of the Senses

Rene’ Descartes argument on sense-perception depends on the mind instead of the body receives a lot of attention from other philosophers. According to Descartes, the human beings can readily know their mind more than the body.  Descartes supported the idea in the example of the wax (Hatfield 12). A wax is observed in its liquid and solid form. The philosopher identified the difficulties of relying on senses of the physical body in an attempt to understand the nature of wax.  Descartes claimed that perception is neither imaging, imagining nor touching. Rather, an inception of the mind only. The senses assist individuals in understanding the true nature of the things happening in their environment. The senses, however, are not enough in determining the truth.  It is possible to have deceptive senses and all that is known with certainty are those things known through personal thinking and judgment of the mind.

The first five meditations of Descartes, the senses do not seem to have more recommendations for them. The beginning of the Mediation indicates that the senses perpetual experiences of the world are susceptible illusions. It is very difficult to distinguish it from dreams and their origin remains unknown.  The as presented by Descartes sense can mislead in judging our bodies providing confused and obscure perception about them through materially false ideas.
