In the transition stage from childhood to adulthood, children pass through the adolescent stage. This stage is characterized by the children beginning to examine and explore self-identity. They start to discover how they fit into the society around them and who they really are among the society’s individuals. As they transit from childhood to adolescence they develop abstract characterizations of themselves and their self-concepts become better organized and more differentiated. They begin to view themselves in terms of personal standards and beliefs. Karpov (2009), lists parent-adolescent relationship and peer interaction as two factors that impact the transition of the adolescents. Their self-image is greatly influenced by their family including siblings and parents and the peers.

Adolescent-parent Interactions

The adolescent period is characterized by disagreements with parents, mood disruptions, and risk behavior. According to American researchers, the adolescents display cognitive abilities and therefore they are able to internalize situations and detect threats to their well-being (Karpov, 2009). They become more sensitive to events in their daily life that did not affect them in preadolescents (Karpov, 2009). According to Karpov (2009), adolescents are influenced by the parents in political, religious, moral, and occupational values. The adolescents have to perform in accordance with the parent’s demands on academic achievements. Adolescents will explore the norms and values of their parents by challenging and expressing their own opinions.

Interpersonal relationships have a strong influence on an individual in their lifespan. The early attachment between an adolescent and their parents influence the expectations and beliefs that the teenagers have about themselves and those around them. In addition, they are influenced in their understanding of the world. Poor-quality experiences with the parents generally result in negative behavioral outcomes. The strength of the bond between a parent and the teenager has a significant influence on the life adjustments that the adolescent hold. These adjustments can either be internal or external.
