The Advanced Micro Device Company produces microchips, CPUs, motherboards, semiconductors and other computer equipment. It is the second largest computer equipment producer after Intel.  The Intel Corporation led in research and development in the computer technology field. Founded in 1968 in the Valley, United States, the corporation extends its production in China, Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia. Nevertheless, Intel and AMD products are available everywhere in the world but they have different capabilities and always products vie for market share. The companies must also adapt to the technological changes.  Intel and AMD are different from one another just as their products. The paper will compare and contrast Intel and AMD in the business computing field.

Multi-Core vs. Hyper Threading

The Central Processing Unit (CPU) or processor is the engine or brain of a computer. The process is an expensive component in the computer as it cost four times greater than the motherboard. The Intel Company created the first microprocessor in 1971 for the IBM Company (Mazidi, Mazidi & Causey, 2010).  These early computer processors came with single cores meaning a single brain of the computer. The computers could only calculate a single thing at a time and took a longer period to complete a task.  Research and development led to the introduction of Hyper Threading on the high-end CPU thus allowed simultaneous processing (Patterson & Hennessy, 2007).  The development looked faster and efficient and it makes the processor become busier. It is essential to note that the Hyper Threading was a unique invention of Intel and not AMD.

The AMD and Intel introduced the first multicore processors in 2005. The chip effectively held 2 or more processors. The multi-core processor in comparison to Hyper Threading produced more power (Patterson & Hennessy, 2007). Subsequently, the chip enabled independent logic processing.  Today, the Intel Company has the ability to offer multi-core processors containing Hyper Threading on both low and high-end CPUs. AMD offer processors with multi cores only and do not have the Hyper Threading.  according to Adomavicius and Gupta (2009), the business computing system requires the multi core processors and more threads to effectively serve the customers.
