Richard David Falco was born in June 1953 and adopted by Nathan and Pearl Berkowitz. His adoptive parents changed his name to David Richard Berkowitz (Calohan, 2001). During his childhood, Berkowitz dropped out of school and grew into a bully in his neighborhood. Nathan was upset by this because he did not live to his potential in education. His adoptive father, Nathan, remarried after Pearl died of breast cancer and opted to turn his back to his new wife which caused the relationship between him and his son to be ruined. In 1971, Berkowitz joined the U.S. Army where he adopted Judaism which was part of the Baptist faith, however, he lost interest in the faith and served in the army for only three years (Calohan, 2001). In his lonely civilian life, Berkowitz changed to become an American serial killer who was known as the Son of Sam (Calohan, 2001). The police in New York City arrested him and he was found guilty of several shooting attacks.
Mental, Emotional, Personality Characteristics, Age, Gender, Ethnicity, and Geographic Location of Berkowitz
Berkowitz has occasionally been termed as a disorganized serial killer who showed signs of personality disorder and paranoia at an early age. He suffered from a paranoid Schizophrenic disorder which is a condition characterized by delusional thinking that is no way based on reality. This disorder affects an individual’s actions and is accompanied by speech abnormalities and hallucinations (Hickey, 2013). Berkowitz in his own world of delusion was capable of hurting individuals around him and even himself. In the murder trial, Berkowitz showed several signs of suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. Personality characteristics that son of Sam possessed were anti-social and he often became lonely especially after he moved from his home to live in the Bronx. The geographic location of most of his crimes is the city of New York and surrounding areas.
