Article One

Van, D. D., Stam, D., Boersma, P., de, W. N., & Alkema, J. (June 01, 2014). Same difference? Exploring the differential mechanisms linking servant leadership and transformational leadership to follower outcomes. The Leadership Quarterly, 25, 3, 544-562.

The authors of this article are corresponding authors at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University. The authors have experience in writing and research that they rely on to provide insights into how staff in an organization are affected by Transformational Leadership (TFL) and Servant Leadership (SL) and the relationship between the two leadership styles. They also studied uncertainty connected to the environment that is linked to the effects of TFL and SL. They utilize a series of studies that involve a field study and two experimental research to study the two leadership styles. The authors address themselves to leading scholars in leadership and people in leadership positions who want to improve their leadership styles. The authors cannot be said to be biased as they have appropriately covered the two leadership styles. They cover the different mechanisms underlying TFL and SL, and they address how the environment can differentially moderate the effects of TFL and SL.

In their study, the authors found out that the two leadership styles, SL and TFL, were related among the followers especially in higher levels of organizational commitment and work engagement. They also found out that the two leadership styles employed different mechanisms to be effective which was evident given the huge gap between leaders who are looking forward to empowering their staff and leaders who are guiding the employees throughout the process. However, the study was limited to only one culture as it focused on a Dutch context which may have hindered the researchers from making more observations on the two leadership styles.
