Anscombe and Valberg

Anscombe and Valberg 150 150 Affordable Capstone Projects Written from Scratch

Write a critical/analytic essay answering one of the four prompts below.

PROMPT 1

According to Anscombe and Valberg, perceptual experiences (i.e. perceptions) are puzzling. Though they agree that there is a puzzle, they disagree about how to solve it. What exactly is puzzling about perceptual experiences? How does Anscombe try to solve this puzzle? And how does Valberg try to solve it? In answering these questions, you must do the following (not necessarily in this order):

(i) Explain in detail what is puzzling about experience. (ii) Explain in detail Anscombe’s proposed solution to this puzzle. (iii) Explain in detail Valberg’s proposed solution to this puzzle. (iv) Critically evaluate both Anscombe’s solution and Valberg’s solution, being sure to raise and explain at least one problem for each. (v) Determine which solution (Anscombe’s or Valberg’s) is preferable and respond to the problem(s) you raised to that solution. (You do not have to respond to the problems raised for the other solution.)

PROMPT 2

According to Aydede and Block, pains pose a serious problem for representationalism about phenomenal conscious experiences. What is representationalism and what does it say about pains? Why does Aydede think pains are problematic for this view? And why does Block think they are problematic? In answering these questions, you must do the following (not necessarily in this order):

(i) Explain in detail both what representationalism is and how it applies to pains. (ii) Explain in detail why Aydede thinks pains are problematic for representationalism (see especially pages 27-30 of the reading) (iii) Explain in detail why Block thinks pains are problematic for representationalism. (iv) Construct and explain responses to both Aydede’s objection and Block’s objection on behalf of the representationalist. (v) Determine which response (the one to Aydede or the one to Block) is weakest and construct a counter-response to that response. (You do not have to construct a counter-response to the other response.)

PROMPT 3

According to Anscombe and Davidson, intentions are unique mental states. Though they agree intentions are unique, they disagree about what makes intentions unique. Why are intentions thought to be unique mental states? What does Anscombe think makes them unique? What does Davidson think makes them unique? In answering these questions, you must do the following (not necessarily in this order):

(i) Explain in detail why intentions are unique mental states. (ii) Explain in detail what Anscombe thinks makes intentions unique. (iii) Explain in detail what Davidson thinks makes intentions unique. (iv) Critically evaluate both Anscombe’s view and Davidson’s view, being sure to raise and explain at least one problem for each. (v) Determine which view (Anscombe’s or Davidson’s) is preferable and respond to the problem(s) you raised to that view. (You do not have to respond to the problems raised for the other view.)

PROMPT 4

According to Davis and Kapitan, the problem concerning intentions is how they connect to action. Though they agree that this is the problem, they disagree about how to solve the problem. Why is it difficult to connect intentions to action? What is Davis’s solution to this problem? And what is Kapitan’s solution to it? In answering these questions, you must do the following (not necessarily in this order):

(i) Explain in detail what the problem of connecting intentions to action is. (ii) Explain in detail Davis’s proposed solution to the problem. (iii) Explain in detail Kapitan’s proposed solution to the problem. (iv) Critically evaluate both Davis’s solution and Kapitan’s solution, being sure to raise and explain at least one problem for each. (v) Determine which solution (Davis’s or Kapitan’s) is preferable and respond to the problem(s) you raised to that solution. (You do not have to respond to the problems raised for the other solution.)
