Analysis of Ayn Rand’s dystopian novel Anthem, which examines the fundamental issues of humanity and the individual, one’s roles within society, and one’s responsibilities to that society. Using the novel as your primary source and at least four secondary sources among those listed in the Module (you may have more), you are to create a research paper in which you analyze Ms. Rand’s Objectivist beliefs as logical or flawed. You may (and should) consider your research from multiple perspectives and sources of literary criticism: feminist, Marxist, libertarian, capitalist, and so on. Since several examples of “logic” are included in the novel Anthem itself, feel free to use what you have learned about logical fallacies (the link is in the Anthem Module in Canvas) to discuss those arguments or those made by the authors of the literary criticism that you choose to include in your paper. Note: you are not required to give examples of the dystopian "logic" from the novel, but it is one way to defend your thesis. Reminder: this paper should not be a book report or a summary of Anthem (I don’t need a summary; I’ve read it, and so have you). Rather, you are to assess the novel by creating a thesis statement predicated on your view of its theme (and how it advances or limits Rand’s philosophy of Objectivism), and then argue your position by using the book itself and legitimate sources of criticism (read: not Wikipedia) as evidence. Proper in-text citations and a Works Cited page are essential if you wish to earn full credit. You should have a minimum of four pages of text (not counting your Works Cited page), complete with in-text citations for your sources. As always, your grammar, usage, and mechanics should be commensurate for that of a college-bound senior student.
