My Leadership Style

In national, regional, and state hospitals, performance is directly associated with the type of leadership integrated into the organization. Pierce and Newstrom (2011, p.9), point out that effective leadership is a means through which competitive advantage can be achieved. However, the environment around hospitals has become uncertain and therefore leaders are faced with numerous challenges. Gunderman (2009, p.32) lists shift in patient expectations, technological advances, increased competition from other hospitals, and high employee turnover as some of these challenges. Therefore, it is important for leaders managing the hospitals to utilize effective leadership styles at all levels. Leadership styles can be associated with increased performance, job satisfaction, employee retention, reduced turnover, and increased motivation.

As a leader in the health care sector and been aware of the changing and complex environment in the industry I adapted to the turbulent environment by utilizing the participative leadership style. This style of leadership focuses on group cohesion, employee performance, job satisfaction, team member development, commitment, motivation, autonomy, and team support. As a leader using the participative leadership style I focus on building relationships with those on my team, therefore I generally become part of the team. This style enables me to blend in more fully with those who are working as part of the team.

I support the use of participative leadership style as the most effective to support the hospital’s goals, missions, and values. In some of the decisions needed for the operation of the hospital, members of the team are involved especially those with more knowledge and experience in the specific areas. This raises the commitment and dedication among the employees which is related to both employee and hospital performance. The improvement of performance is critical as it ensures the health services offered are of quality and positive patient satisfaction. As Gunderman (2009) states, patient care is directly impacted by the quality of leaders in addition to the way the practice in the medical field is undertaken. Gunderman (2009) continues to add that poor leadership negatively impacts the performance of hospitals. Therefore, to enable successful delivery of the services effective leadership is essential and to obtain the goals and visions and meet the hospital’s values.
