Assessment instructions
Students will examine a topic of strategic disaster health management and write a strategic
report on the issue.
Examine and report on one (only) of the following topics:
Role of the military and private security firms in contemporary humanitarian response
The disaster-development nexus
Knowledge management systems for the 21st Century
Note: you may choose an aspect of one of these topics.
Include in your report the following:
a. A description of the topic and its elements and a discussion of why this topic is
important to disaster management.
b. Identification of key issues of concern in this topic and their significance.
c. What would you recommend should be done to improve the management of this topic?
d. What key leadership strategies would be required to make this happen?
This should incorporate conceptual frameworks and leadership principles and should include
such data as is appropriate. It should be focused at a strategic level; seeking to identify how this
issue could be attended to in your community. The brief should be precise and concise within the
range of 2500 words (+/- 10%) words. The study guide and lecture notes are not to be used as
references. There are enough references and readings listed in the study guide and reading lists
to support any statements that you make. Please use the references in study guide as much as
possible.

Cover page: The document should have a cover page. The cover page is to include your name,
student ID, word count and assessment name.
Page numbers: All pages should be numbered.
Margins: Please do not use margins less than the default margins for word documents of (2.54
cm top, bottom, left and right).
Font and spacing: Please do not use font less than Arial 10. Spacing of less than 1.5 is also not to
be used.
Spelling: Australian/English spelling is required. Please ensure your spell check is on English
(Australia).
Referencing: The study guide and lecture notes are not to be used as references. There are
enough references and readings listed in the study guide and reading lists to support any
statements that you make. A reference list is required and should always be placed immediately
after the main body of the document (i.e. before the appendices.). Consistent referencing style
is to be used.
Should any of the above requirements not be met, they will impact on marking.
