Discuss and contrast specific ways free and enslaved black women attempted to change or improve their status before and during the Civil War with examples from our readings. What were the obstacles to their efforts? (10) 25 points total. This is a midterm paper where page count does not necessarily matter but it must answer each question fully. All the information must come from the three books “Ar’n’t I a Woman?” by Deborah Gray White, “Words of Fire” by Beverly Guy-Sheftall, and To ‘Joy my freedom by tera w hunter. The questions are as follows: 1.a. Compare and contrast the rights, duties, and obligations of enslaved women with the rights, duties, and obligations of free women of color, enslaved men, and free white men and women during the Antebellum period using examples from our readings. Identify and briefly discuss the political, economic and societal changes, and the opportunities and challenges faced by southern freed black women after Emancipation to the early 20th century in terms of family, work, and legal rights. How did class and intra-racial bias affect black women? Did everything change? Why or why not? (10) 2.b. Did the networks of women and families discussed by Deborah Gray White and Angela Davis carry over into Reconstruction and beyond into the 20th century? If so how, why, and what specifically was different? 5 points

2.c. What are the common themes and differences in the writings and speeches of at least 3 black female post-bellum activists such as Ida Wells-Barnett, Frances Harper, Anna Julia Cooper, Mary Church Terrell, Elise McDougald and /or others from our readings? Use specific examples. (10)
