Guidance Notes for Essay Topic 1

Think critically to research and conceptualise a new ticketed event of any genre with a particular emphasis on researching and discussing the production and operational implications to install and deliver that event onsite. Think about a suitable venue and how that choice would also impact on your production and operations requirements.

Does your concept require large production and operations budgets, what type of staffing structure and skillset do you need? How can your production values help to differentiate your event from your competitors? Who would you class as your competitors and how would your event stand out in a crowded industry?

What are your event’s aims and objectives, your target audiences, is it a one-off event or a repeat event and how does all that impact on your event production values and operational requirements? Use case studies, research facts, figures and trends within the industry and back up your ideas with real life examples.

Visit some new events across London and experience first-hand, how these new concepts have been produced. Have they used new production methods, have they used new technology, are they more creative, are they run and managed differently? Are they positioned differently, what is their point of differentiation, are they using a new or unique topic and does any of that impact the production or operations of that event? Guidance Notes for Essay Topic 2

Think critically to evaluate the events industry and research and discuss how event companies / agencies are evolving their portfolios, developing new business and creating new income streams from existing events, repeat events and future concepts being planned and launched.

You can hone in on a particular genre of events or look at the wider industry and compare a number of types of events and how they tackle this issue of growth, evolving and developing new business and income streams. Are there different methods and models between the types of events, or is there a shared model that the industry agrees works for developing new business.

How are event companies and agencies competing and differentiating their offer from their competitors, is their point of difference in diversifying their portfolio, or developing new income streams from their existing events? What are these new income streams? Are B2C better at this than B2B companies, or vice versa? Which companies are the leading lights within the industry related to this subject? Which methods are working and which are failing or does it depend on the topic and the content?

Are event companies / agencies focusing on squeezing more income from existing customers or reaching out to new customers with new offerings? Does business development exclusively mean you need new audiences, new events and to enter new markets? Or does it mean creating new business for existing audiences or both?

Use real life case studies, research trends in the industry and back up your opinions with facts and figures where possible. Think about the effort to reward ratio and whether the costs of developing new business outweigh the benefits. Do event companies /agencies look inwards or outwards, locally or globally, niche or mass market when making decisions around new business development and creating new income streams.
