Further advice and detailed marking criteria:
70+ To achieve a mark of 70+% requires a sophisticated, evaluative and critical understanding of theory. This understanding should encompass the underlying concepts and principles, and the translation of concepts and principles into practice. The answer will also demonstrate how practice is linked to theory and how theory informs practice. An excellent answer will use appropriate source material that is challenging and requires analysis. A mark of 70+ will synthesise source material in a sophisticated and critical manner. A mark of 80-90% will cover most of these aspects in an outstanding fashion; a mark of 91-100% will cover all of these aspects in an outstanding fashion and display exemplary achievement to the very highest standards of scholarship.
60-69 Requires a very good understanding of theory and contain a high level of evaluation and critique. Again, this understanding should include concepts and principles. It will also demonstrate some understanding of how concepts and principles are related to practice. Very good source material will be used and attempts at analysis and synthesis will be made.
50-59 This mark will demonstrate some understanding of theory and an attempt at critique will be made. Links between theory and practice will be drawn, although this might be descriptive rather than analytical. Some attempt to synthesise the material will be made. A satisfactory range of source material will be used. A mark in the 50 – 59 range is likely to be descriptive rather than analytical, although some attempt at analysis must be made in order to achieve a pass mark.
45-49 Fail A mark of 45 – 49 will be awarded where a student has failed to meet the above criteria, but has almost reached the required standard. Little or no critical evaluation will be discernible, although there might be some description of theory and practice. Source material might also be inadequate.
0 – 45 Clear fail A clear fail will contain no evaluation, critique, analysis or synthesis. It will describe, possibly in a perfunctory way, the material. There will be little or no demonstrated understanding of theory and few links will be drawn between theory and practice. A clear fail might also fail to reference adequately.
