A genogram and an ecomap are models used in nursing to help provide an in-depth analysis of a specific family. They are models of data collection tools that give important information such as social structure, size, spirituality, and health problems within the family (McGoldrick, 2016). Genograms are tools used to create a visual display of the family tree and they provide a quick and handy context in which to assess the health risks of an individual. Ecomaps, on the other hand, are a visual display of the formal and the informal systems in the family’s ecology. The ecomaps gather information concerning the social networks of a member or members of a family and the nature of bonds they carry. This information is helpful for both clinicians and their clients. When providing healthcare to a family, both genograms and ecomaps provide an analysis of the family. Both the tools can be used to collect information on biological mothers, fathers, children, and other members of the kinship network and the extended family. These tools used widely in different family situations have developed over time to reflect diversity related to culture, sexuality, gender, and spirituality. According to Bernstein (2011), genogram and ecomaps are also used in psychology as they act as a way of mapping out how members of a family hold the relationships between them and also to learn how they interact with one another. This paper focuses on Andrew’s Family through the use of a genogram in order to assess the health status of the members of the family.
