Genetically-modified plants are “created” to help increase the yield of the plant, to make the plant more nutritious for human consumption, to help deter insect attackers, and/or to make plants resistant to herbicides (which in turn increases the yield of a crop plot by minimizing competition with other plant species). Both farmers and consumers stand to benefit from GM plants; as the growing of GM plants becomes easier and their supply increases, prices should decrease.

There is also concern that GM foods might cause serious side effects to the humans that consume them and all other plants and animals that reside near them. In fact a study from 1999 showed that monarch butterfly larvae were killed by GM corn pollen that was altered to fend off other insects.
