“The Influence of Job satisfaction on Employee Turnover”.

As another example, if you chose “self-efficacy” as your Concept 1 and “employee engagement” as Concept 2, then your topic will be:

“The Influence of Self-efficacy on Employee Engagement”.

How to conduct literature review and write a 1500-2000 word report:

The following components are required in your report:

  • Introducing Concept 2 (e.g. employee turnover)
  • Introducing Concept 1 (e.g. job satisfaction)
  • The influence of Concept 1 on Concept 2 (e.g. The impact of job satisfaction on employee turnover)
  • Conclusions (implications for practice)
  • Reference List

Details about each component of the report:

Section A: Introducing Concept 2 (e.g. employee turnover)

Your tasks before writing this section:

Conduct a literature review to understand how the existing studies (peer-reviewed journal articles) defined Concept 2 (e.g. employee turnover). For example, if your topic is: “what is the influence of job satisfaction on employee turnover?”, first, you need to synthesise (i.e. read, compare and contrast; and finally classify) the existing research to see how different researchers conceptualised (or defined) concept of “employee turnover”. In other words, you need to find out what different researchers mean by “employee turnover”. You might find out that the concept that you chose (e.g. employee turnover) has been approached/defined differently by different researchers.

  • Content you need to include in your writing for this section:
  • For this section of your report, first, write an introductory paragraph introducing Concept 2 and explain why it is important to study Concept 2. For example, if you chose “employee turnover” as concept 2, explain why “employee turnover” is an important issue to be solved/managed in organizations; or if you chose “employee commitment” as Concept 2, then you need to explain why “employee commitment” is important for organizations, and why organizations need to enhance or maintain employee commitment.
  • As a second step, briefly make mention of different ways the existing literature approached (i.e., defined or conceptualised) this concept. For example, you can write:

“Employee commitment has been approached differently by different scholars in the literature. Meyer & Herscovitch (2001), for example, defined this concept as… (You need to provide examples of different approaches).

  • Finally, clarify how you, yourself, conceptualised Concept 2. That is to say, you need to clarify that the way you approached and defined Concept 2 is in line with a particular existing conceptualisation (definition) of this concept in the literature. For example, you can write:

“Although there are different ways to conceptualise employee commitment, in this paper, this concept was defined/approached in line with Meyer & Herscovitch (2001)”.

*Important: You are required to cite peer-reviewed journal articles within text (please see the file on Canvas explaining how this report will be marked).

Section B: Introducing Concept 1 (e.g. job satisfaction)

  • Your tasks before writing this section:

Conduct a literature review to understand how the existing studies (peer-reviewed journal articles) conceptualised or defined Concept 1 (e.g. job satisfaction). For example, if your topic is: “what is the influence of job satisfaction on employee turnover?”, you need to read, compare, and finally classify the existing research to see how different researchers conceptualised (defined) ‘job satisfaction’.

  • Content you need to include in your writing for this section:
  • For this section of your report, first write an introductory paragraph introducing Concept 1 and explain that it is one of the important factors influencing Concept 2.
  • briefly make mention of the ways the existing literature approached this concept. For example, if you chose ‘job satisfaction’ as Concept 1, you can write:

“job satisfaction has been approached differently by different scholars in the literature. Locke (1969), for example, defined this concept as a type of … (You need to provide examples of different approaches).

Finally, clarify how you, yourself, conceptualised Concept 1 in your paper. That is to say, you need to clarify that the way you approached and defined Concept 1 is in line with a particular existing conceptualisation (definition) of the chosen concept in the literature. For example, if you chose ‘job satisfaction’ as Concept 1, you can write:

“Although there are different ways to conceptualise employee commitment, in this paper, this concept was defined/approached in line with Locke (1969)”.

*Important: You are required to cite peer-reviewed journal articles within text (please see the file on Canvas explaining how this report will be marked).

Section C: The influence of Concept 1 on Concept 2 (e.g. impact of job satisfaction on employee turnover)

  • Your tasks before writing this section:

To justify that Concept 1 influences Concept 2, you are required to do a literature review and see if there are studies which found this relationship statistically significant. Develop a table in which one column contains the list of all research (references) which found this relationship statistically significant and a column which found this relationship non-significant.

Although it is not needed, if you want to go extra miles, you can further classify the literature by exploring the similarities and differences of the studies in each column. For example, you might find that most of the studies found the influence of Concept 1 on Concept 2 is statistically significant only for men but not for women; Or you might find that the majority of papers found this relationship stronger for baby boomers as compared to generation Y, etc.

  • Content you need to include in your writing for this section:

You need to write a few short paragraphs which explain the table you developed and elaborate on your classification of the literature:

  • First, acknowledge the studies that found the relationship between Concept 1 and Concept 2 (i.e. impact of Concept 1 on Concept 2) statistically significant. Briefly compare the relevant papers you listed in your table for this part.
  • Then, if you found a few papers which did not find this relationship statistically significant, in a short paragraph, briefly elaborate on them.
  • Finally, at the end of this section, insert the table that you developed. Please note that in your table, in addition to results and findings of quantitative studies, it is possible to include research that discusses possible drivers of concept 2 through qualitative methods. When you explain the table within text (i.e. while you explain your classification of the research), you can provide further information about those qualitative references you included in the table and let the reader know, for example, that a particular study (e.g. Wilson and Smith 2001) has not been statistically tested.

Existing research showing statistically non-significant results for the impact of Concept 1 on Concept 2 Support from the literature (quantitative or qualitative) for the possible influences of Concept 1 on Concept 2

*Important: Please see the file on Canvas to find out how this section will be marked including information on required number of peer-reviewed journal articles. Please don’t forget that you need to provide references both in the table and within text.

Section D: Conclusions (implications for practice)

  • Content you need to include in your writing for this section:

Provide recommendations for managers in relation to the influence of concept 1 on concept 2. For example, if you chose ‘employee commitment’ as Concept 2, and ‘job satisfaction’ as Concept 1, in Section D, you can provide some recommendations to managers on how to enhance employee commitment in organisations by focusing on ways to enhance employees’ job satisfaction.
