The election for one of Texas’s two US Senate seats will be held on November 6, 2018. Ted Cruz, the
incumbent, is the Republican candidate for the seat and US Representative Beto O’Rourke from El Paso
is the Democratic candidate. You are the best independent political consultant in Texas, and since this
will likely be an intense campaign, both candidates want to hire you to analyze the state of Texas politics
and provide election advice. Choose which candidate you would like to work with, and provide him with
a three page minimum memo that discusses the current political climate in Texas and how this will
impact his chances of winning the election. Specifically, the candidate will need information on the
following topics:
• Voter distribution and demographics in Texas – how “red,” “blue,” or “purple” is the state
(meaning how much does it currently lean Republican or Democratic, or is it fairly evenly split)?
Where are these red, blue, and purple voters located throughout the state? How are
demographic shifts in Texas affecting Texas politics?
• What issues do Texans most care about? How should the candidate address these issues? How
closely should the candidate follow official Republican or Democratic party positions?
• What interest groups or political action committees might support the candidate? If the
candidate does not accept PAC funds, how will the candidate raise funds and will this hurt or
help the candidacy?
In order to make compelling arguments for your candidate, the thesis of your memo should present the
candidate with a statement about how easy or difficult your research leads you to believe it will be for
him to win the election in November. Then argue this thesis using information from the three points above. In order to successfully prove the thesis and make your case, you will need to provide
documented evidence, data, and facts that support the claims you are making.

Make sure your conclusions are based on documented facts, evidence, and supporting data. This
assignment is not asking for your personal opinion of the candidate, whether you agree or disagree with
the candidate and his political positions, or your personal opinions and personal beliefs about Texas
