Because the high school is the exit institution in American education, the secondary school is expected to find solutions for many of society’s problems. Many reports, policies, and commissions have called for high school reform in the last three decades. Beginning with the first ten years of the 21st century, secondary education has been changing drastically. Confronted with controversial issues like accountability, pressing problems of the global economy, emerging technologies, national security, schools of choice, multiculturalism, and privatization, there is considerable effort underway to understand. As curriculum leaders, we need to explore the effects of some of these pressures in shaping the school curriculum. Let’s enter into a discussion of how these issues can impact our secondary school curricula by responding to the following questions:
What current curriculum issue appears to be the most pressing issue both locally and nationally? State your position on the issue.
What general guidelines would you recommend for curriculum leaders to follow in dealing with controversial secondary curriculum issues?
Remembering the various issues read in the articles (curricula practices, high school types, technology, multiculturalism/diversity, standards-based assessment, etc…), how do these issues affect the school-improvement initiatives underway in your high school?
How is your state and/or district dealing with the move away from Common Core State Standards (or have they)?
