Hi Class, before I begin a difficult project I like to break it into smaller bits. I have done this for you. Here is what the rubric says, ‘in brief’ and it is what I will look for in your two to three page, 12 pt. font, Times Roman, APA paper.
Tips:
- Please use the Week 4 DB to ask questions.
- The 2017 Starbucks report is a pdf. What I do is use the ‘Find’ feature. To do this, right click on the 2017 Starbucks report. Click on “Find”. Then you can input what it is you are looking for as in receivables, depreciation, etc.
- Remember to read the information provided in notes at the bottom of the report, etc. It is in here you may find good information.
- Calculate ONLY those items required. DO NOT do the entire financial statement. I need to be able to figure out what you do. If I cannot I will have to send it back ungraded. I don’t want to do this. I’m guessing you don’t want it back ungraded either.
Horizontal & Vertical
- Accounts Receivable
Discuss methods of accounting for receivables and evaluating uncollectible receivables impact on the recording process and financial statement presentation.
Use the information on pages 46 and 48 of the 2017 Starbucks Annual Report to identify these numbers. The depreciation and amortization amounts are combined.
Horizontal & Vertical
- Fixed assets
- intangible assets
- depreciation
- amortization over time
Analyze 2017 Starbucks’ methods for fixed asset and intangible asset acquisitions as well as depreciation and amortization, including asset categorization. How do these methods affect the balance sheet, income statement, and statement of cash flows?
Horizontal & Vertical
- Debt financing
Analyze 2017 Starbucks’ method of debt financing. In your analysis, you should address both current and long-term liabilities, including the issuance of bonds.
Here is an example of how you might set this up. I would begin by explaining you are analyzing the (those above listed) accounts. Maybe explain what vertical and horizontal analysis is. Then you could paste in your results (see my awesome chart below). Once you have done that you could divide it out and discuss each section. By divide it out I mean you could have a subheaded section for Accounts Receivable, then another for Fixed Assets, and so on. This way you are ensured a brief discussion is not missed. Or you could combine them into related sections such as Receivables, and then Assets, and then Depreciation. Make sense? Clarity is writing is important.
You will need to review the 2017 Starbucks Report for specific numbers. I will provide as an attachment in the DB and email to you.
Here is an example how to set up your calculations for this week. You can work this in Excel and then copy and paste it into your paper.
Please feel free to set up your calculations as shown below. I am also attaching an Excel spreadsheet for those of you who wish to use Excel. You will need to input the numbers and calculations of course. Remember to use pages 46 and 48 in the Starbucks 2017 Annual Report.
