Answer preview
Fairtrade is a trading enterprise, based on transparency, discussions, and respect. Fair Trade mainly seeks fairness in global trade by offering improved trading environments and securing the privileges of sidelined producers and workers. Fair Trade increases awareness of unsustainable and unfair trading practices in the global trade towards the minority farmers. In situations where food prices increase, Fair Trade plays a vital role in protecting the small, vulnerable farmers (Papavasiliou 204). In Africa for example, coffee farmers in Ethiopia see their coffee at $2.10 per lb. Compared to the price of $1.10 per lb. for conventional market. Farmers on the Fait Trade organizations make a profit of up to $1,300 more than the farmers depending on the conventional market. In Uganda, the chair of Ankole Coffee Producer’s Cooperative Union admits that Fair Trade has changed the market landscape. Coffee prices he says fluctuate but under the Fair Trade umbrella, the farmers are given a guaranteed price that does not change no matter what. This means they get a consistent income from their coffee and they can plan ahead better (Dragusanu, Giovannucci, and Nunn).
How and why it is intended to prevent Exploitation
In the traditional method of agribusiness, traders and intermediaries were mainly focused on making profits and not safeguarding the livelihoods of the farmers. When the prices of commodities are high, these middlemen and traders take advantage of the farmers and buy their products at a low price and sell them at a huge profit. The traditional methods led to farmers been exploited because of the difficulties they faced in pricing and marketing. Civil society movements were formed to protect this right of farmers and other producers and avoid exploitation.
