This assignment allows the students to do their own research and dig
deeper into an area of their interest. The report will be accompanied with
an internal memo.
You are working for a company that currently does not have a dedicated
HR department. The General Manager (GM) does most of the tasks herself
with the help of an external firm that does payroll and occasional help
from a recruiting agency. Over the last five years, your company has
grown to 68 FTE.
Now the GM is getting ready to go international and wants to set up sales
offices in Vietnam and Indonesia. She is also investigating opportunities
for a strategic alliance with a company in China. If she moves forward
with this, she will need representation in China as well.
Your GM noticed that you took an IHRM course while attending courses at
UoA and has asked you for help. She wants to establish an HR
department and needs a plan. What would the core functions be? How
would the new department help us with the internationalization we are
about to see in our company? Which guiding principles should we use as
we develop our policies? What should we do first given the direction the
company is taking?
Prepare a report of 2000 words explaining what the HR department would
do and why. Draw on what we discussed in class and do additional
research in those areas you recommend the GM should focus on initially.
Critically evaluate the literature and make your assumptions explicit.
Evaluate alternatives, and explain why you are making the
recommendations you are putting forward. Reference the resources you
have used using APA v6. Finally, add an internal memo that will
accompany your report and include highlights of the report.
