Length: 1000-1200 words
For all the horrible things that happen in The Assault, there is very little direct
emotion. That seems kind of problematic, doesn’t it? At moments of crisis, Anton
disappears or becomes passive. As well, he doesn’t work very hard at figuring out
what happened to his family. Anton doesn’t look for answers to his life—they just
come upon him.
With that in mind, write an essay that answers the following question:
How does the novel pattern/shape the interaction between violence and distance?
Things to think about as you begin to work:
Although you may want to, be wary of arguing that distancing itself is bad or good,
and that this is the lesson The Assault teaches. Pay attention to the nuances of the
novel, and how the novel presents this interaction between violence and distance.
Does The Assault even make some kind of judgment about it? Why might it be hard
to answer this question?
This assignment has a serious difficulty: avoiding plot summary. To help you avoid
this, the following approaches to the topic are NOT allowed:
1) Just paraphrasing the plot moments where the relation between distance and
violence seem to interact.
2) Going to Sparknotes or some other garbage site.
3) Approaches that ignore two thirds of the novel.
In your essay, make sure that you are specific in your use of evidence from the text.
On the first page of your essay, put your essay’s title. Underneath that title put in
boldface your thesis sentence, the sentence that sums up what your essay is trying
to prove.
