Is the choice of subscribing to one sex or the other important (within a binary model)? Must surgery and hormone treatment begin immediately? Would you advise “secrecy” about the child’s condition? What must change in our daily lives to accommodate a third sex category?
Precise instructions: Put yourself in the position of a friend to a person who questions his/her gender identity (imagine this as your very best friend). How would you support them through this tough process? Is the choice of subscribing to one sex or the other important (within a binary model)? Why, or why not? How do you think this would impact your friendship? What do you think your personal response would be?
Put yourself in the position of a counselor to parents with an intersexual infant. How would you guide them in the sex assignment process? Must surgery and hormone treatment begin immediately? Why, or why not? Would you advise “secrecy” about the child’s condition? Why, or why not? (NOTE: you are not expected to know medical practices but should be able to provide information to parents based on materials from this course as well as scholarly sources).
Move beyond a binary model of sex to a multiple-sex model in which there is a third category of sex-intersexual. What must change in our daily lives to accommodate a third sex category? Think of societal meaning systems and symbols, practical and logistical issues, etc.
Directions: Write a 10-12 page (I count pages as body of text only), double-spaced paper in essay format. Do NOT list out your answers to these three questions; your paper should be a complete essay! Please be as thorough as possible and answer all aspects of these questions. (You need to do outside research to help you with this). Remember to address all three scenarios/topics in your paper. Follow the rubric as you write your paper.
