Introduction
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is a popular media broadcasting house founded in 1922. It started as a private company but moved to become a public corporation in 1927. Over the years, the BBC has grown to a national institution which now plays a central role in reporting political news and building the culture of the society in the United Kingdom and other countries around the globe. Schlesinger (2010, p.271) states that the BBC has been a key player in innovations in the broadcasting sector especially in the UK and has ensured the best training for media personnel all around the globe. In 1999 the BBC was focused on improving its creativity as Greg Dyke was appointed as director general. Dyke became the successor to John Birt who had directed the BBC for seven years. The new Director General, Greg Dyke, set out to try and help BBC regain its position in the international market. Dyke founded the One BBC: Making It Happen program that was launched in two phases. The first part of the program was aimed at creating a better structure for BBC while helping to cut cost. On the other hand, the second phase launched in February 2002 and was focused on changing the internal working environment for the over 15,000 staff of the BBC. Dyke expected the employees of the organization to become creative since the competition facing the BBC had become severe. The program included improving the leadership skills of all the managers of the BBC through a leadership training program. The qualities of the managers and their relationship to their staff were also improved. The present paper focuses on the One BBC: Making It Happen program and how effective it was in developing the leadership of the BBC.
The Impact of Culture and Business Environment at the BBC
Schein and Schein (2017, p.5) define culture as a behavioural pattern that is transmitted socially. The systems of behaviour such as practices, religious beliefs, political organization, social groupings, and settlement patterns relate the human communities to their natural settings. Steers, Nardon, and Sánchez-Runde (2016, p.21) state that culture is a learned behaviour that guides how people respond to social situations, their interactions in the society, and how they interact in business environments. Cultural theories enable one to examine members of a society and understand why and how they react to certain situations. Various theories have attempted to define culture.
