Written critiques are an essential part of any online course, and particularly important for this course in International Marketing. Almost half of all possible points to be earned this fall session are devoted to the preparation of these critiques- a total of 1000 possible points for the four Harvard Business Review Multimedia cases assigned. It is essential that you carefully read the requirements needed for acceptance of grading, and the format to be used in the preparation of these written critiques. The cases to be used for these critiques are purchased from Harvard Business Review and purchase instructions will be listed under Content on Blackboard. Each written critique submission can earn up to 250 points each, and extra bonus points can be awarded for exceptional submissions.
You are to label each of the four sections of your written submission as follows:
- Statement of Purpose- 10% of your total submission.
A detailed statement of why you are writing this critique, what you will specifically
demonstrate in your submission. It is in effect a snap-shop of what will follow in the
next three sections of your submission.
- Summary of the Case- 30% of your total submission
This section details the author’s(s) viewpoints; it is a summary. It must be complete
and capture all the major points of the case. Do not mingle your own opinions or
personal views in this section.
- Analysis/Opinions – 50% of your total submission
This section is your own opinions, analysis, recommendations, etc. In this section you
comment on the strengths and weaknesses of the case. You may bring personal
experiences into this section. You are never graded down for expressing a negative
opinion of a case; instead opinions are judged based upon how well you defend
- Retrospective Commentary- 10% of your submission
This section requires you to Google the company portrayed in the case, and the
author(s) of the case to provide up-to-date information on the status of what the
company is doing at present, as well as the current status of the author(s) of the
LABEL EACH SECTION CLEARLY- AND MAKE SURE YOU BALANCE THE CONTENT OF YOUR CASE SUBMISSION USING THE PERCENTAGES RECOMMENDED ABOVE. IN OTHER WORDS- IF YOU WRITE A 2000 WORD SUBMISSION- THEN 200 WORDS ARE DEVOTED TO PURPOSE- 600 WORDS TO THE SUMMARY SECTION- 1000 WORDS TO THE ANALYSIS AND OPINIONS- AND NO MORE THAN 200 WORDS TO THE FINAL RETROPECTIVE COMMENTARY. ALTHOUGH THERE CAN BE SLIGHT DIFFERENCES IN THE TOTALS FOR EACH SECTION- TRY TO BALANCE THE SECTIONS AS DETAILED.
REQUIREMENTS FOR SUBMISSION
- All critique submissions are submitted in Blackboard where they are subject to the Turn-It-In system for plagiarism and originality.
- All submissions must meet a minimum word count of 1200 for ACCEPTANCE FOR GRADING AND POSSIBLE POINTS. However a submission of 1200 is considered bare minimum, and will be treated as such for the awarding of points- thus a 1200 word submission will be awarded only a possible 125 points out of a possible 250. It is expected that submissions will easily be 1800 words or more in order to earn possible maximum points to be awarded. Any submission less than 1200 will not be accepted under any circumstances.
- All submissions must meet an originality check that does not exceed more than 10% the originality check on the Turn-It-In system. If you submit a critique that exceeds 10%- it would be wise to redo the submission immediately, and then resubmit, as the Blackboard system will allow for second submissions that write over the first submission. However if I access the submission, and subject it to possible grading, and discover that the originality check exceeds the 10% required, then the submission will be assigned zero points and a second submission will not be allowed. Submissions will not be grade until after the final deadline for submission.
Let me be very clear on the issue of originality. Originality is not the same as plagiarism. Originality means that the submission is in your own words, and that you have not used any sources, quotes, etc. that are more than 10% of your total submission. The submission thus requires you to devote a minimum of 90% of your entire submission in your own words- no one else- even if properly cited or documented.
- All submissions must be in by the deadlines established- NO EXCEPTIONS.
- Proof of Submission- successful submission on Blackboard are always noted and you are to download the receipt of successful submission at that time. If there ever is any question of whether a submission has been sent – you must produce this receipt to allow the system to be re-opened. It would be wise to always get the submission in well before deadlines on the dates specified, as corrections can be made before the deadline expires.
