The Witness is a documentary filmed for over 11 years and was directed and produced by James Solomon. The documentary focuses on one famous death story, the death of Kitty Genovese, a young, beautiful, bar manager who was divorced from a previous married, but at the time of her death, was a lesbian engaged to her roommate friend. Genovese was stubbed in 1964 at the age of 28 by a knife-wielding attacker, Winston Moseley. Genovese became a common name over the years after news that she was stabbed to death on a Queens street while her cry for help were ignored by 38 on lookers in neighboring apartments did nothing. They did not even call the police to report the killer who stalked and stabbed a woman in three separate attacks. Genovese left a legacy that has since that moment spawned the concept of social phenomenon popularly referred to as the bystander effect.
The main character in the documentary is Bill Genovese, Kitty’s younger brother. At the time of Genovese’s death, Bill was 16 years. Bill sets out to make a difference in the society due to his sister’s experience. He tries to unravel the mystery that surrounds his sister’s death by finding the truth behind the stubbing. Bill sets out to separate facts from fiction which sends him back to the scene of the murder. In the search for the truth, Bill uncovers lies that later change his life, condemned the city dwellers, and defined an era. His investigation lead him to the scene in Kew Gardens, Queens, where neighbors at the adjacent building are claimed to have ignored her call for help. The attacker fled when the victim, Genovese, cried for helped, however, none of the residents came to her rescue and Moseley returned back to finish the job after more than 30 minutes.
