Introduction

Harry Brighouse wrote the book on Education to express broad and insightful ideas.  The book wrestles with fundamental questions touching on aims of education.  It draws a difference between schooling and education. Schools are important in teaching more than what families and societies can teach.  An educated society is essential in establishing development and strong governments. Education should reach every citizen and avoid inequality for the society to excel. The book has several chapters but this analysis will focus on chapter one on ‘Educating for Self-government’.  The chapter seeks to answer the question on how education can achieve self-governance/ reliance. Moreover, the chapter illustrates how to change the deep-seated perceptions and beliefs in most part of the citizens.

Chapter Summary

The Supreme Court in the United States made a landmark decision on school leaving age in Yoder v. Wisconsin.  The State of Wisconsin wanted all children to attend school until the age of 16. However, the ruling reduced the Amish’s school-leaving age to 14 (Brighouse, 2010). The chapter reflects on the interest of the state to have young people attend school. The children should never be deprived of their opportunity to choose from the various life choices. The children should be left to make informed decisions about their life due to autonomy.  The children may decide to follow values not related to their community.  While autonomy is essential in the community, the parents must be the first teachers and example to the children. The parents should equip children with the ability to decide on the life.
