What is the Purpose of this Assignment?
The purpose of this assignment is to explore your online identity first-hand to see what’s actually out there about you online and to examine strategies for managing your online identity.
What are the Assignment Requirements?
For this assignment, you will:
1. Research your online identity using a variety of social media tools.
o You can use Google Web Search to search for your name in quotations (i.e. “Jordanne Christie”). If you have a common name, try your name in quotations plus your location or other demographic information (i.e. “Jordanne Christie” + “Port Perry”, or “Jordanne Christie” + “Durham College”)
o You can use Google Image Search to search for images that include you
o You can use People Search engines including PeekYou and pipl
o You can use Twitter Search to search for your name mentions at Twitter
o Try logging out of your social media applications and platforms and do a search to view how your profiles appear to the public
2. Generate a two-page (single spaced) written report that in includes the following sections:
o Introduction: What does your current online identity say about you?
o Current Online Identity Analysis: Does the information uncovered surprise you? How do you feel about it? What worries or pleases you about your online identity? Is it an accurate profile?
o Desired Online Identity Analysis: What do you want your online identity to show and say? Does your current online identity accomplish these goals? If so, how? If not, why not?
o Online Identity Strategies: What are some strategies that you can use to improve or modify your current online identity? What strategies could you use to expand your online identity in the future?
o Online Identity Reflection: Why is it important to be aware of your online identity? How does your online identity impact you now and how might it affect you in the future?
How do I Submit the Assignment? An Assignment dropbox called Online Identity Assignment has been created for you to submit your report. Please note that your report must be in a Microsoft Word format.
When is the Assignment Due? The assignment is due at the end of Week 7.
