- The following 10 numbers were drawn from a population:
5 7 7 10 10 10 11 12 12 13
Please conduct a one-sample t-test on the above sample to investigate whether the sample likely comes from a population with a mean of 13.
- Sensory isolation chambers are used to examine the effects of mild sensory deprivation. The chamber is a dark, silent tank where subjects float on heavily salted water and are thereby deprived of nearly all external stimulation. Sensory deprivation produces deep relaxation and had been shown to produce temporary increases in sensitivity for vision, hearing, touch, and even taste. The following data represent hearing threshold scores for a group of subjects who were tested before and immediately after one hour of deprivation. A lower score indicates more sensitive hearing. Do these data indicate that deprivation has a significant effect on hearing threshold? Test at the .05 level of significance with two tails. (Related/Paired-samples t-test)
Please conduct a related-sample t-test on the above sample to investigate whether sensory deprivation influences hearing sensitivity.
- Research has shown that elderly people who owned dogs were less likely to pay visits to their doctors after upsetting events than were those who did not own pets. Similarly, consider the following hypothetical data. A sample of elderly dog owners is compared to a similar group (in terms or age and health) who do not own dogs. The researcher records the number of visits to the doctor during the past year for each person. (Independent samples t-test) The data are as follows:
Dog Owners Control Group
- Is there a significant difference in the number of doctor visits between dog owners and control subjects? Use a two-tailed test with α = .05.
