Opinion Pieces

Due: SEE CALENDAR

Instructions: Research and write an opinion piece on a subject that relates to regional or

economic development. Submit a two-page, ~ 600-800 word paper with at least 3

references that support your opinion on the topic of your choosing.

The piece should strive to achieve the following (in no particular order):

  • What is the topic/subject?
  • Provide a brief background outlining the controversy behind the topic and

examples of its use.

  • What is your opinion? Do you support or condone the project/initiative and why?

Be prepared to defend it.

  • Provide at least 3 references to support your opinion.

Examples of topics:

Ø Should public transportation be free?

Ø Should local/regional economies invest in education?

Ø Should public funding (federal or local tax dollars) be used for public

transportation infrastructure (streetcar, highways, etc.)?

Ø Is inter-state competition to recruit new business good or bad (Reno & Tesla)?

Ø Is the use of tax dollars, or lack their of, as incentive to attract new business good

or bad?

Ø Should tax dollars be used for sports stadiums (SF, Minnesota)?

Ø Should height limits be limited in urban environments (DC, Paris, etc.)?

Ø Is historic preservation good or bad for a local economy?

Ø Which is a greater driver of Regional Development – attracting new business or

creating a vibrant arts/culture scene?

Ø Is Rent Controlled housing good or bad?

Ø Should local governments raise minimum wage requirements within their

jurisdictional boundaries (Seattle, San Jose, SF, etc.)?

Ø Is Eminent Domain an acceptable tool for Economic Development?
