Instruction: Choose a central topic from the course material and choose film/media examples. Produce a 5 page paper analyzing and evaluating the representation/s of the Asian or Asian American character.

watch the film/media
use MLA or APA for citing sources
-include at least 2 media concepts from the course material

Things you can include in your analysis:

Thesis: A thesis is your central argument in an essay. Make sure you include a thesis in your introduction paragraph.
Brief background: Provide a brief synopsis of the movie (no more than a paragraph). Assume that your reader is familiar with the movie.
Representation:Who is/are the Asian or Asian American characters? How are they represented? What is the role of the character in the story? Compare their representation to other characters. How is power reflected in the movie (in terms of race/class/gender/sexuality, who has power)? Is the representation of Asian or Asian American realistic? Is the representation of Asian or Asian American humanizing or dehumanizing? Explain.What does the character symbolize? Is this character/s story central to the narrative?
Historical Significance: Due to the scarcity of Asian/Asian American characters and stories, these few representations in mainstream media have lasting implications on current and future Asian/Asian American representations. Analyze if these characters/stories/stereotypes continue to persist and what ways. Consider the historical context of the period of the film? Consider the historical context of the time the film was made? How does it impact the representation in the film? For example, was the film during time of war, ie; WWII, Korean War, Cold War, Vietnam War, etc.
Contemporary Significance: How is this media significant? Or is it not? What are some of the criticisms it has received by Asian American community? What are some of the praise it has received by Asian American community? Contextualize the time period the media was created.
Audience: Who are the intended audience for the film? How is this intention translated through the filmmaking? Who do you think the audience supposed to relate to in the film?
Connections: How can you analyze the film using concepts from the text? For example, you can use the concepts of yellow face and yellow peril to analyze the Broken Blossom film. Gender and Sexuality to analyze Anna May Wong.
Support: Make sure to provide supportive evidence of your argument. You can refer to a film and make sure to quote from the book.
