Research Essay Assignment
This essay assignment asks you to write an 8-10-page essay (2,000-2,500 words) discussing a topic related to one of the weekly lectures and make an argument about what your study reveals about the historical development of capitalism in a particular time and place.
The Essay Plan assignment is due Week 7.
The Research Paper is due Week 12 (e-copy submitted on turnitin.com by 30 min. before the start of class and hardcopy in the last class).
This assignment develops skills in research, reading, analysis and writing. If the first assignment requires you to summarize, at much shorter length, the argument presented in the article you chose to examine, this assignment allows you to become a historian and present an interpretation of your own based on reading a number of different sources, particularly a primary source from the era you are examining.
Rather than a general narrative describing what happened in the history you are recounting, try to organize your paper around course concepts or themes, and make your arguments about key insights your research and analysis have revealed about aspects of the historical development of capitalism. (For ideas see a list of key course concepts and themes in the Critical Thinking Resources folder on Moodle)
This essay will require you to read or view the source materials and take detailed notes on their contents. You are welcome to approach me in my office hour or by email with any questions.
Your paper will require at least five sources, including at least one primary source and one scholarly article. Be sure to analyze the primary source for any insights it offers in relation to your topic and the historical development of capitalism.
Once you have a base of raw material assembled, you then need to construct an essay that makes an argument about the topic you selected in response to the main research question you have posed.
Your essay should begin with an introductory paragraph that outlines exactly what you intend to argue in your paper and end with a conclusion that recapitulates the main argument and offers some thoughts about its wider significance.
A strong analytical thesis will provide a convincing central claim that is well supported with evidence. The thesis statement should be made in the introductory paragraph. The body of the essay is where you will organize your supporting points using citations to support your arguments.
Your essay should contain a minimum number of direct quotations. If you use quotations, use short ones only to emphasize a key point you are trying to make. Cite selectively. Extensive use of quotations will lower your grade.
Be sure to use Chicago Manual of Style footnotes throughout your essay (and before the bibliography) indicating where you obtained key ideas, quotations, and data. If you are unsure about when to use a footnote or endnote review the Academic Integrity quiz questions of the Academic Integrity module on SPARK. When in doubt, cite the source. [I prefer footnotes because they make it easier to read a paper online]
Provide a bibliography on a separate page at the end of your essay with the sources you consulted arranged alphabetically by the surname of the author listed in the following format:
Burley, David G. “Hill, James Jerome”, Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online
For more detailed information on how to use Chicago Manual of Style footnotes see the links provided for our library workshop in the top right corner of the Business History Research Guide. Particular attention should be given to writing style. Use complete paragraphs and proper sentences—no point-form is allowed.
Please include a word count for your paper at the end of the text.
Papers must be submitted on turnitin.com
Late papers will be subject to a penalty of two percentage points per day (including weekends).
