What is Rhetorical Analysis?
Rhetorical analysis is using the principles of rhetoric to make sense of how and why a given text works the way it does—to make sense of how and why it creates meaning.
You are to write a 3-5 page rhetorical analysis over “The Sanctuary of School” (located on pages 856-861 in the textbook). In creating this paper, you will complete a Rhetorical Analysis Breakdown of the essay from the textbook, prepare an outline, write drafts, and then finalize your paper.
You are writing this essay to demonstrate your ability to not merely summarize a text, but rather to explain how the essay works or does not work. Understanding how arguments work (and how they “work on” the reader) will help prepare you to write your own successful arguments later in the semester. Because you are writing about another text and its writer, and not yourself, your opinions, or your feelings, this essay must be written in the 3rd person (points will be taken off for 1st persona [“I”] usage). The voice/tone should be appropriate for academic discourse: i.e., formal, but not inaccessible or overly technical.

For this essay, you must do two things: 1) figure out what the writer is trying to accomplish, and 2) identify what writing tactics he or she is utilizing to accomplish it. The assignment is based on the premise that all writing is aimed at a specific audience for a specific purpose. Your task with this assignment is to determine the exact goal of the piece of writing and to explore, on paper, the strategies and rhetorical devices used by the writer.

What is the author’s thesis or central idea?
What questions (stated or unstated) does the author address?
How does the author structure the text? What are the key parts, and how do they relate to one another and the thesis?
What strategies has the author used to generate interest in the argument and to persuade readers of its merit?
What evidence does the author use to support the thesis? How persuasive is the evidence?
Does the author anticipate objections and counter opposing views?
Does the author use any faulty reasoning?

Your audience for this essay will be potential readers of the essay—perhaps people who might find the essay useful or interesting—as well as people who may have read the essay casually without giving much thought to the tactics used by the author. Obviously, additional readers will include both your classmates and myself.

What should NOT be included in your rhetorical analysis?

Keep in mind that your focus is not on your own opinion about the topic being discussed in the article, but on explaining how the author of the article has put together his or her argument and appeals to the audience. In other words, if you were writing about an essay discussing the war in Iraq, what you think about the war would not be the focus; rather, you would need to show how the author argues his or her point and how the strategy worked in the paper.

Citation and Documentation

If you quote/paraphrase from your text (and you should), you must include proper MLA in-text citation. A Works Cited page is also required for this paper but does not count as one of the required 3-5 pages.
