Critical infrastructures in the United States are assets that have an important function for the society and economy.  According to the United States government, there 16 critical infrastructural sectors whose systems, networks, assets whether virtual or physical are considered essential (Homeland Security, 2017). The infrastructure sector includes Food and Security, Chemical, Transport System, Water and Water Systems and commercial facilities.  In the event of an attack or incapacitation of these assets, it can lead to debilitating effects on the national security and safety, public health, economy or a combination of these elements.  In 2001, the president under the Presidential decree established the Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience to advance the national policies, strengthen, and maintain resilience to critical infrastructure (Norman, 2016).  However, the country needs to remain vigil due to the advanced terrorism tactics that can be used to infiltrate on the national security. The paper looks into commercial facilities at risk of threats and hazards.

Commercial Facilities under Threat

Terrorism emerged as one of the global phenomena in the twenty-first century that significantly altered the global security measures. The nature and value of terrorism shifted and resulted in the emergence of different descriptions and definitions of terrorism over the last century.  According to Norman (2016), terrorists pose a great security threat to every aspect of the modern world that includes the commercial sector.

Commercial Hub and Shopping Malls

The terrorist organizations and groups target the commercial sector as evidenced by the frequent attacks on shopping centers in the major cities around the world.  Also, terrorists continue to attack retail sub-sector in the West including retail establishments due to limited security and large crowds. For instance, the ISIS claimed to have launched an attack on a shopping mall in St. Cloud Minnesota. The terrorists injured twenty people using guns and knives.  In September 2013, the Al-Shabaab, an affiliate of the Al-Qaeda attacked the Westgate Shipping Mall in Kenya that left sixty -seven people dead.
