In the wake of the Parkland school shooting, there have been many calls for constructive change with respect to gun laws and school policies. What, in your view, ought to be done? Note: If you select this broader, more flexible prompt, you must keep your paper focused by writing a clear thesis and developing two arguments (in paragraphs two and five) that directly support your thesis. Format

Name, and word count in upper left-hand corner.  Title centered at top of essay.  1” margins, 12 pt standard font (Times New Roman, Calibri, Ariel, etc.), double-spaced. Minimum of 1200 words. Using and Citing Sources

This is not a research paper.  Your task is to develop your own thinking on the matter, so I encourage you not to depend heavily on outside sources. In particular, I encourage you to stay away from the internet. However, if you use a source—whether quotation, paraphrase, or just borrowing an idea—cite your source in a footnote. Include the author, title, source, and web address. Plagiarism or academic dishonesty will earn a grade of F for the assignment, and possibly a grade of F for the entire course. Do not use ideas, wording, phrasing, or examples taken from a source without proper citation. You are responsible for knowing what counts as plagiarism. When in doubt, ask me or a writing tutor!

General Guidelines

To get started, try clustering your thoughts on the topic. Or try creating a pros and cons list, or free writing. This should help your arrive at a tentative position on the question. Once you have an idea of your thesis, begin outlining the structure of your paper.  Make sure to build your essay on the exact pattern of the following outline. Failing to do so will negatively impact your grade.

Paragraph 1. Introduce the question in an interesting way

  • Include a brief hook to grab the reader’s attention
  • Give a clear statement of your thesis
  • Address important terms that need defining (if any)
  • Address assumptions that should be made explicit (if any)

Paragraph 2. Support your thesis

  • Give a deductive or inductive argument in standard form (i.e. number your premises and conclusion)
  • Develop your argument by providing evidence (reasons) for thinking that the premises are true.  You might want to focus on a single premise—the one that needs the most support

Paragraph 3. Give the critic a voice

  • Develop an objection to the argument you just gave
  • Use transitions and clear language markers to indicate that you are presenting a view that is not your own; for instance, “One might object,” or “The critic will say…”

Paragraph 4. Answer the critic

  • Reply to the objection you raised
  • That is, give evidence (reasons) for thinking your position is not as weak as the critic maintains

Paragraph 5. Support your thesis (again)

  • Provide a second deductive or inductive argument in standard form (i.e. number your premises and conclusion)
  • Develop your argument by providing evidence (reasons) for thinking that the premises are true. You might want to focus on a single premise—the one that needs the most support

Paragraph 6. Give the critic a voice (again)
