- Definition: Violence in intimate relationships covers a range of acts committed against a person with whom one is in an intimate relationship, whether as dating partners or marriage partners, that leads to the physical, psychological, and sexual harm. These acts may include physical acts of aggression such as slapping, punching, beating, shoving, and kicking. They may also include acts of psychological abuse such as intimidation, humiliation, condescending habits, and blackmailing. Forced sexual activities such as intercourse as well are also considered to be acts of violence in intimate relationships. Moreover, coercing the partner to engage in certain activities that appear to interfere with one’s autonomy fall under the same umbrella.
