Intro

The Arab Spring was a series of protests that began in Tunisia in 2010 and spread to other Arab countries in the region. The protests were widely regarded as a social movement that demanded an immediate end to the suppression of political participation, human rights abuses, government corruption, and widespread poverty. The immediate effects of the Arab Spring have been profound and far-reaching. The most important effect was the demonstration that despotic leadership can be overthrown through popular grassroots revolts (Lutterbeck, 2013). The protests led to the fall of longstanding leaders in Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and Yemen. In Syria, there are ongoing attempts by rebel forces to remove the current regime from power. These attempts have been characterized by a bloody civil war leading to the deaths and displacements of thousands of people.
