Willingness to Pay for Climate Change Mitigation: Evidence from China

ANSWER PREVIEW

China has become one of the  largest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world (Li et. Al., 2016). However, little research has been done on the willingness of Chinese citizens to pay for these changes on climate.  Yujie Li, Xiaoyi Mu, Anita Schiller, and Bowie Zheng conducted a study on a sample of 4,169 adults towards public attitude and cognition towards climate change.  They then analyzed the determinants of the public’s willingness to pay (WTP) for products that are energy saving and environmental friendly. According to their research, they found out that a majority of the population, 85 percent, of those involved in the study indicated that they are ready to pay at least 10 percent more than the prices of products in the market (Li et. Al., 2016). Among the factors found to influence the public’s WTP to include income, education, age, and gender.  The study also found out that public awareness and concerns on these sensitive issues are significant factors influencing WTP.

The study is conducted in all 31 provinces of mainland China and interviewed more than 4000 respondents, therefore making the study more reliable compared to other previous studies conducted on the same topic in China (Li et. Al., 2016). To make their study more reliable, they study the responsibility of public perception and awareness in explaining the variation of WTP something that a majority of the previous study did not do. The results of the study show that those interviewed and who have more knowledge and are more concerned regarding the undesirable effects of change in the climate have a higher WTP.
